I love a sign that is outside of a childcare place near my house. It says “Choose Joy.”
You know you are aligned with your higher self or your soul when you feel joy — also love, gratitude or peace. And no matter what is going on in your life, you can access these feelings. It can be as simple as feeling joy and gratitude for a gorgeous day and having the eyes that can see it.
The wonderful thing is that the more you feel these feelings of joy, love, peace and gratitude, the more life starts to work out well, and synchronicity and happy coincidences appear more and more into your life. People, things and events will pop up that work beautifully well in the scheme of what is going on in your life.
This is why mindfulness is so important. It is key to realize what is going on in our minds, what we are habitually thinking and feeling, and to concentrate on the successes in our lives instead of areas that bring concern.
Concentrate on even the tiny successes, like getting out of the house on time this morning and that things went well and smoothly getting everything together for the day. Feel joy for the fact that you are healthy etc. Focus on areas where you are thriving.
I love this story that illustrates this truth. A woman is talking with her coworkers at work in the depths of the recession. She said everyone was in low spirits and commiserating about their lack of sales and fear of getting laid off.
She decided she could do nothing about it at that moment and went to lunch to take a breather from it all. She went outside, crossed the street to a sidewalk cafe and noticed that it was an absolutely gorgeous spring day.
She found a nice table outside and ordered her favorite lunch. She sat there enjoying the feeling of the warm sun on her skin and relished eating a delicious lunch. She put her feet up and noticed adorable birds hopping along on the sidewalk so she delighted in feeding them small bits of bread.
She walked back across the street to her office feeling relaxed and content in the moment. As she waited for the elevator, she saw a man she had not noticed before and they started to chat. He told her he worked on the fourth floor.
She said she worked on the second and sold several types of insurance. He said he needed to buy a certain type of insurance for his company. So it turned out that she made a huge sale to him.
It really is a choice to feel joy. As I wrote in the blog last week, it is so common to be in the same rut as we are everyday and worrying about all that is not working in our lives.
This becomes a habit and we become addicted to the feeling of worrying. Almost like worrying will keep us safe and help make sure we get everything we need to do all done. That could not be further form the truth though.
Worrying and negativity just keeps you in a perpetual state of fear and not feeling good. And in this state, you can’t hear intuition, or access creative solutions and inspiration. You are in a low energetic frequency disconnected from the higher self and spinning your wheels not getting any traction.
So the question is how to get out of this constant state of worry and negativity? Most people don't know that the most simple and effective way to do this is to change your brain wave frequency from the habitual Beta wave brain state to Alpha wave state.
New brain scan technology and other advances in neuroscience have proven that most people in our culture are habitually in Beta wave brain state and that many benefits occur when a person relaxes into Alpha brain state. Yogis and Buddhists have known this for over a thousand years.
Most people are in Beta wave brain state all day long. Beta is a fast frequency. When stressed we are in high Beta state, which has an even faster frequency. If a person spends too long in Beta wave brain state it becomes hard to stop thinking negative thoughts.
However once you relax, the brain moves into the slower Alpha wave state. All of a sudden you not only feel calm, but you have clarity of mind, you are connected to intuition and solutions to problems pop into your mind.
In Alpha brain state, it is hard to think negative thoughts. I write more about this in the free Manifesto on the website and in the ebook, Finding Heaven on Earth: Discovering the Power of Flow.
How do you get into Alpha Brain State? An easy way is to do a deep breathing pattern for a few minutes. It is important to know that if you are stressed, it is hard to do a deep breathing pattern.
If you are stressed, first you have to do something that you know relaxes you like taking a hot bath, walking in nature or on the beach, whatever it is for you that is relaxing. If you are not able to do this at the time, then just thinking about doing something relaxing will also relax you.
Then you can do a deep breathing pattern for a few minutes. Any deep breathing pattern will work. An easy one is to breathe in deeply to the count of 5 and breathe out to the count of 10, and keep repeating this for several minutes --even just two minutes can get you into Alpha brain state.
Once you are in Alpha state, it is really possible to choose joy because you are relaxed, calm and have a clear mind. You are no longer stuck spinning your wheels in negativity.
Since most people are habitually in Beta brain state, it takes consistently getting into Alpha state to grow the strong neural pathways to eventually make being in this state automatic.
I wrote in my last blog about how we become used to being in a certain frame of mind, and when we try to change it, the body and brain chemistry is not used to it and will seek homeostasis. There is a very helpful meditation provided by Dr Joe Dispenza for free on Youtube that will help if you listen to it in the morning.
You can Google the guided meditation on Youtube. It is called, “Guided Meditation You Are The Placebo Binaural Beats Subconscious Reprograming." It has the added benefit of getting you into the whole brain state if you listen with earphones. It is a fantastic way to start the day.
